I set out to write a huntin’ book. Somewhere between the hogs and the house slippers it turned into the whole story: the trailer floor, the job I lost, the family that saved me, and the God who was out there in the mud the whole time. It’s funny in some places and it’ll sit heavy in others. That’s about right.

Most everybody around Mathiston, Mississippi knows David Ellis as Yawt Yawt: the pig trapper who says Jesus’ name at the end of every video, the man who finds kids’ lost deer and pulls beavers out of culverts at two in the morning so a grandma can make it to church. But before the cameras, there was a skinny kid who’d rather cry than throw a punch, a single daddy face-down on the carpet of a trailer home begging God for one more day, and a man who gave twenty-three years to a city that fired him in a single meeting, and only later understood they hadn’t fired him at all. They’d turned him loose.
It isn’t a hunting book, even if it looks like one. Sure, there’s a 351-pound hog taken in house slippers, a raccoon that whooped three grown men in a boat, and a Colorado elk hunt that nearly spelled the end of him. But the animals are just the setup. Between the turkeys and the traps sits the story of a grandson learning that a man provides with what he’s got, a father learning to get up off the floor, and a husband learning that peace ain’t the same thing as quiet.
